Welders must be good at solving problems. Think about it; there are a variety of projects you could be working on, in a variety of settings. If your problem solving skills aren’t up to scratch, it’s unlikely you’re going to get much done at all.
Are You Good At Maths and Science?
Welders work with a variety of metals at different temperatures. You’ll be using your knowledge of maths and science constantly as you work and complete projects. You may even be required to work out how much material is needed, the cost of a project, or log your own hours. Having these skills is a must!
Do You Have the Endurance Required?
Welding takes a lot of mental and physical endurance. It can be a laborious task, so you need to make sure your mind is up for the challenge. Not just that, you may be standing in some awkward positions as you do your work. Being able to do this for as long as it takes to complete the project is a must.
Safety
When welding, safety should be the number one concern of yours. You must know exactly how to do things the right way without injuring yourself and others. If you’re not careful, you could end up causing a lot of damage. You must be comfortable as you work too, as you’ll be doing it for a long time. - Learn about the industry. What kind of things would you like to help make? This will help to steer you in the right direction when it comes to applying for jobs.
- Learn the trade by doing a bunch of courses and maybe even by getting an apprenticeship. The more experience you have, the better. Try to be the best in the business and get as much hands on experience as possible. You can then get certified and decide what you want to do with yourself!
