8 Tips for Going Green

Living a greener life doesn’t have to mean sweeping changes to your current one. Here are just a few easy and effective ways to start doing your part for the environment.

1. Go Paperless

Why print a dozen memos when you can send a mass email? You can go paperless at home, too, eschewing post-it notes for reminders logged into your smartphone or alerts set up on your computer.

2. Turn Off Lights

When not in use, cut off the juice. Make a habit out of flipping the light switch whenever you leave a room. It’s completely painless, but you’ll be saving a little bit of energy every time.

3. Grow Your Own Vegetables

Not only will you free your taste buds from commercial chemicals and pesticides, but you’ll also be doing your part to reduce the need for them. It’ll mean one less tractor billowing smoke into the world.

4. Unplug Your Electronics

Were you aware that you waste power every time you leave something plugged in? It doesn’t matter if the device is powered off. As long as it’s plugged in, it’s still sapping energy.

5. Ride A Bike

You don’t need to take a car everywhere, do you? Dust off that old bike in the garage and see how far it will take you. If you add a basket, you can even go grocery shopping with it.

6. Recycle

Many people have an outdated image of recycling in their heads. You no longer have to painstakingly sort your garbage and then haul it yourself to a recycling center. You can just throw it all into a giant recycling bin and have the recycling trucks take it away.

7. Replace Your Light Bulbs

Halogen bulbs are slowly going the way of the dinosaur. The new species in town is the compact florescent light (CFL), which provides the same amount of illumination with only half the expended energy.

8. Shop Locally

You’re adding to the carbon emissions in the world every time you make a truck or train deliver food across state lines. If you buy from local farmer’s markets, however, you won’t play any role in the trucks clogging up the atmosphere!

From creating your own compost to choosing an eco-friendly energy company, there are a thousand ways you can do your part for the environment. Good luck! The planet thanks you!
